How Digital Marketing Works

how digital marketing works

Digital marketing works by using digital channels to promote products or services to consumers. These channels include websites, social media platforms, email, mobile apps, and search engines. The goal of digital marketing is to reach consumers where they are spending their time, and to do so in a way that is targeted, relevant, and engaging.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

One of the key ways that digital marketing works is through search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO involves optimising a website so that it ranks higher in search engine results for specific keywords. This can be achieved through a variety of tactics, such as:

On-Page Optimisation

On-page optimisation: This involves optimising the content and structure of a website to make it more easily discoverable and understood by search engines. This can include optimising titles and meta descriptions, using header tags, and ensuring that the website is mobile-friendly.

Off-Page Optimisation

Off-page optimisation: This involves building links from other websites to a website in order to improve its visibility and credibility in the eyes of search engines. This can be done through link building tactics such as guest blogging, broken link building, and creating high-quality content that other websites will want to link to.

Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC)

Another way that digital marketing works is through pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. PPC advertising involves placing ads on search engines or other websites, and paying a fee each time the ad is clicked. This can be an effective way to drive targeted traffic to a website, but it is important to carefully manage the cost of the advertising and to track the return on investment.

Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing is another important aspect of digital marketing. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram can be used to promote products or services, engage with customers, and build brand awareness. For example, my TikTok account is used to drive traffic (customers) to this website. This can be done through a variety of tactics, such as posting regular updates, running contests, and sharing relevant content.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is another way that digital marketing works. By building a list of email subscribers, businesses can send targeted marketing messages to a highly engaged audience. This can be done through newsletters, promotional emails, and automated email campaigns.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is a key component of digital marketing. This involves creating and sharing valuable, relevant, and consistent content in order to attract and retain a clearly defined audience. It can include blog posts, infographics, videos, and other types of content that provide value to the consumer and help to establish the business as a thought leader in its industry.

Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is another way that digital marketing works. This involves partnering with individuals or organisations who have a large following on social media or other platforms to promote products or services. Influencer marketing can be an effective way to reach a specific target audience and to build credibility and trust.

Mobile Marketing

Mobile marketing is also an important aspect of digital marketing. This involves using mobile apps or mobile-optimised websites to reach customers on their mobile devices. This can include SMS marketing, in-app advertising, and push notifications.

How Digital Marketing Works – Beginner Mistakes

Digital marketing is a great business model, when everything is deployed correctly. Unfortunately, when first starting out many beginners make several mistakes. For example:

Link Spamming

One of the most popular models used in digital marketing is affiliate marketing. This is where you use digital marketing to drive traffic (customers) to a product or service in the hope that the customer then makes a purchase. If they do, you then receive a commission.

Unfortunately, many people simply take their affiliate links and ‘spam’ them everywhere. This can be frowned upon by social media platforms and people simply do not warm to this method. So avoid doing this.

No Follow Up

Most customers do not buy a product or service upon first contact. They go away, perhaps to do further research, compare prices or simply because they haven’t got time there and then to finalise a purchase. Therefore, it is imperative to capture peoples email addresses, so you can then follow up.

All good digital marketers build an email list, so they can then follow up with their customers afterwards.

Summary – How Digital Marketing Works

In order to be effective, digital marketing campaigns should be based on a thorough understanding of the target audience and their needs and behaviours. Digital marketing efforts should be carefully planned, tracked, and analysed to measure their effectiveness and to identify areas for improvement.

Digital marketing as a model is excellent. For example, the overheads in starting and running the business are extremely low, which makes it a great business for beginners.
